Invercargill Waihōpai

Mahi toi elements were produced under the guidance of Waihōpai Rūnaka (Murihiku Marae) alongside their selected designers and artists.  Local carver, James York provided the creative detailing for the pou on Esk and Don Streets.  ‘Mahika Kai’ fittingly stands outside the Law Courts on Don Street and  ‘Te Kāika’ overlooks the community gathering area on Esk.  Cast mahika kai figurines are scattered through the garden beds of Esk waiting to be discovered by tamariki and adults alike.  Patterns etched in basalt and granite complement these features and reflect the natural wetlands and ngahere bush that once lay across this area.
